Get the information you want, when you want – and (drumroll) where you want it. Locationbased services arepopping up – and soon they’ll hit you, too. The social media has lept out of the computer and into the streets. The possibilities are immense. Here’s why:
In the next few months and years, location-based communications are on the rise. No, they are not on the rise. They are exploding. The massive success of the smartphones has finally enabled the technology to mature and for a lot of people to be able to access the applications. In other words: You can now communicate to people with the knowledge of both who they are and where they are.

With Google’s ambitious Streetview and not entirely new, but really good and fun services like foursquare and gowalla, users and developers are storming the gates. In Denmark, no big player has entered the field yet. But within months, weeks, the first Danish companies will launch new and relevant content for users in specific locations and at the exactly right moment.
The idea has been around since the start of the millenium. But since GPS tools are now found in every phone, the technology not only makes it possible, but also (almost) free for big and small companies, groups of people and passionate communicators to make the most of services like foursquare. In foursquare, you can add fun tasks, comments and tips to your physical location and attract people who are unfamiliar with you, but in the neighborhood. You can reward returning customers and even give prizes to your most active customer. Amazing.
And this is just the beginning. Imagine where you’ll be in a few years, when your physical location is another natural dimension to be reckoned with in social media. Imagine what happens when you can see your friends’ comments about a restaurant before you enter the door, or get a nice little tip about the best place to find 1980’s vinyls in your area, or check availability at the nearest car rental, or share a comment about your hotel room, good or bad.
